Tea Party for seniors with Diabetes
Seniors who are newly diagnosed with diabetes are sometimes told by doctors to “cut out sugar,” but are not told what they can eat, or helped with portion sizes and general meal planning.
Many survivors in our program voice feelings of isolation in dealing with this new dietary issue, and wish to meet others facing the same struggle.
The “Tea Party for Seniors with Diabetes and High Blood Sugar” fulfills this need with monthly meetings that are run by a medical professional from the community. Participants ask questions of the facilitator and share ideas with fellow group members. Meeting topics range from “Healthy Snacking” to “Cooking for the Yomim Tovim,” to “Recognizing When Your Sugar Is Too Low or Too High.”
This group has greatly reduced the rate of blood sugar-related emergencies among program seniors!
“I was always hungry, so I would eat bread – and my sugar would go up very high. My doctor told me about Bikur Cholim’s program, and I’m glad he did! Faigie, who runs the group, teaches us about what to eat to stay full, and even gave me a recipe-book full of foods that I like to make. Now when I visit the doctor, he says I’m his best patient!” – Mrs. F.
